Short description of the event:

The WEMIN Project proposes the implementation of a series of interventions for the empowerment and integration of Migrant and Refugee Women (MRW) in eight partner countries (www.wemin-project.eu). Hellenic Open University (HOU) – DAISSy Research Group is the Coordinator and “Olympic Training Ltd” is a project partner in Greece.
More specifically regarding WEMIN actions in Greece and as far as empowerment is concerned, specific material has been designed that includes scenarios for the implementation of sessions addressed to MRW. The material is relevant to the educational system of Greece (structure, values, objectives), the parent – school cooperation, lifelong learning opportunities, the role of women in the Greece (rights and support structures), etc.
Furthermore, the set up of networks of civil society organizations and associations is foreseen, in order to provide more information on the opportunities offered to MRW by local stakeholders. This will involve interactive activities for MRW to understand important aspects of the host society and gain useful information about e.g. the care and social protection system, opportunities on volunteering, training programs, etc.
Within this framework, emphasis is put to exploit ICT tools and equipment (tablets) during the empowerment sessions, so that the MRW involved have the opportunity to put in practice the knowledge already gained during the training. Therefore, through the empowerment sessions they will also benefit from the operation of the WEMIN e-platform which serves as a tool for MRW and the host community to implement collaborative activities with the help of tutors. At a next stage they will participate in forum discussions, create blog posts, upload episodes and announcements related to integration etc.
The WEMIN empowerment material has been designed and finalized (in March 2019). The first circle of empowerment sessions involves 14 MRW and takes place at the premises of a public primary school, during school non-wokring hours (address: Meandroupoleos 42, Ampelokipi, GR 115 24 Athens, Greece). This is achieved with the support of the Municipality of Athens through the action of “Open Schools” – this is an initiative of the Municipality which is also funded by “Stavros Niarchos Foundation” and “John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation”. The empowerment sessions will start in the end of March and foreseen to be completed by mid May 2019.
Empowerment as well as the use and enrichment of the e-platform are undergoing activities of the WEMIN project – a second circle of empowerment sessions is expected to be completed by October 2019. Digital tools will be exploited by MRW for the implementation of these upcoming empowerment sessions, as well.
